Not often do you find a cricketer in a press conference with his arm in a sling. Jesse Ryder had thrown open a debate on his discipline after making an impressive start in international cricket. After a long time, he came as a wave of flair at the top of the New Zealand batting line-up. A Greatbatch-esque approach and a colourful personality promised explosions of both talent and frivolity. He scored 196 runs in five ODIs at a strike-rate of over 90 against England in his debut series, and so as to balance the good with the stupid, promptly broke his hand after an unnecessary evening sojourn.

At 24, he has a bright career ahead, if he can see it. There aren't many cricketers in First-class cricket who can boast of a batting average that is more than 16 counts ahead of their bowling average. With his Kiwi brand of medium-pace and his enterprise at the top of the order, Ryder can become a crowd favourite. His weight has also been a point of discussion but if he wants to stay as he is, this isn't the worst sport he has chosen.

New Zealand cricket will pray that he means it when he says he'll iron out his personal problems. A good Jesse Ryder will make the Kiwis a better team.
