New Zealand has seen a deluge of decent wicketkeepers in the recent time, and Gareth Hopkins is one of the front runners. However, with Brendon McCullum as the lead keeper, Hopkins has been finding it difficult to find a permanent place in the ODI side.

As a first class wicket keeper he has already played 100 first class matches, and that includes having played for the Northern Districts, Otago and South Island, apart from Canterbury.

His fine performances with the gloves and a more than decent outing with the bat, fast tracked him for the National selection. He made his ODI debut in the Natwest tri-series between New Zealand, West Indies and England. Unfortunately, he did not get to bat on his debut, and nor did he bat in the next three matches of the series before finally getting his chances in his fifth match. He scored a duck!

In fact, it was in his eighth ODI that he opened his account, ending up scoring nine, as he played as a pure batsman in the team with Brendon McCullum donning the gloves. He did make it to the World T20 in 2007 in South Africa, but returned home without playing a single match, with McCullum's performances overshadowing every other Kiwi wicket keeper's with the bat and behind the stumps.
