Upul Tharanga is an attacking opening batsman for Sri Lanka. From his early days, Tharanga was tipped to make it big in the international arena. He first really caught the eye during the under-19 World Cup in 2004 when he smashed 117 against South Africa and then followed it up with 61 in 42 balls against India in the next game. His ODI debut in 2005 was marred by the Asian tsunami, which washed away his family. The left-hander has left these tragedies behind and come a long way after that. Because of his flamboyant batting style, the youngster is predominantly an ODI player. But with Jayasuriya’s retirement from Tests, Tharanga will also look to cement his place in the longer version of the game.
