Profile

Abraham Benjamin de Villiers aka AB sports abundant energy when on the field. During his maiden first-class season AB hammered five half-centuries in his 438 runs and grabbed the attention of the national selectors. He debuted against England at Port Elizabeth on December 17 in 2004.

An avid sportsperson since childhood, he tried his talent at various disciplines and finally channeled his focus towards cricket after astonishing Under-19 performances. AB has the potential to bat at any position in the side and looked up to as a quality fielder. At many instances, he has shouldered the responsibility behind the wickets and batted at all positions from top to lower order in the batting line-up with reasonable frequencies. Initially he tried bowling too but his performance as keeper eclipsed his stint as a bowler. He hit his first Test century in January 2008 against West Indies scoring 103 off just 109 balls. During the World Cup in 2007, he scored 315 runs from 8 innings becoming one of the leading run scorers in the competition.

He has been a good fielder with good speed. Despite all these exploits, he has a long way to go to prove his credentials even better.
