After his father and brother failed to make it to the national squad, Graeme Swann broke the jinx. He is an aggressive all-rounder from England who has grown in reputation as a spinner who can put a price on his wicket when required. Being a self-confident character, Swann is an attacking off-spinner who looks for wickets rather than containing the batsman. He is also a hard-hitting batsman down the order.

The off-spinner made his ODI debut in 2000, but disappeared from the international circuit after that. His successful county stint saw him back in the reckoning for selection. He capitalized on the opportunity with an impressive all-round performance in the ODI series against Sri Lanka in 2007, where he was recalled to the side nearly eight years after his debut. Swann is a sharp spinner of the ball and likes to maintain consistent pressure on the batsman. His debut Test was against India in November 2008. Swann announced his arrival in Test cricket by picking up two wickets in his first over; only the second time that has happened in the history of Test cricket.

He often has to vie for his 'spinner spot' in the side with Monty Panesar. The poor form of Panesar meant he was recalled into the Test side for the series against West Indies in 2009. He picked up 26 wickets in five matches and scored one half-century in the series. That was enough to include him in the Ashes squad. Even though he did not pick up any wickets in the first Ashes Test in July 2009, he scored 78 runs in the match and was retained for the second Test while Panesar was dropped despite putting up a defiant last-wicket stand with James Anderson to draw the Test match.
