Profile
With an average of 60 in first class cricket, it was always going to be tough for the Australian selectors to neglect the talent and charisma of Philip Hughes. He was already making waves in the domestic circuit before his first call-up to the national side. Barely 20 years of age, he was named Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year, the Sheffield Shield Player of the Year and won the Blues' Steve Waugh Medal. It was no wonder then that he made his debut, along with Marcus North and Ben Hilfenhaus, against South Africa. Ironically though, unlike North who scored a first-innings century, Hughes was dismissed for a fourth ball duck by Dale Steyn. His next three innings though proved that he was a talent that's here to stay. With scores of 75 in the second innings of his debut Test followed by 115 and 160 in his second Test, Hughes momentarily made the Aussies forget the absence of a certain Matthew Hayden. At 20, he was the youngest Australian to make his Test debut in 25 years and the youngest to register a hundred in each innings of a Test match. As if that were not enough, he scored three consecutive hundreds for Middlesex displaying an uncanny ease for England wickets. Not surprisingly, he was selected as opener for the all-important Ashes 2009. While at the wicket, he favours the off-side, especially point and cover where he gets most of his runs.
