Many people around the world do not understand why Australia took so long to recognise Michael Hussey's talent. Due to the strong Australian middle-order batting line-up between 2000 and 2005, Hussey could not find himself a place in the side. But once he got an opportunity to represent Australia, he grabbed it with both hands and has never looked back.

After his run-piling form in the limited version of the game, Hussey was immediately drafted into the Test team. It took little time for the gritty southpaw to stamp his authority as he smashed his maiden Test ton in just his second match against West Indies.

Hussey was ranked the best ODI batsman in the world at one stage and also owns the mark for the fastest player to achieve 1000 Test runs after taking only 166 days. The left-hander has the knack of playing crucial knocks in crisis situations and is regarded by many as an ideal replacement for former Aussie one-day great Michael Bevan.

However, after a terrific start, he has not been able to maintain the consistency in Tests and his averages have been dropping steadily since 2007.
