England need to act, and fast

With six overs to go, I thought England were going to win. What happened thereafter, only the team can explain. Instead of bowling full and straight with an attempt to hit the bottom of the stumps, the bowlers tried everything else. It was what we call ‘lickerish all sorts’ in England.

There was no thinking and it showed on the field. There are lots of questions that need to be answered at the end of the series.

England need to improve in the coming days or else it will get difficult. It was almost as if the pressure got to them.

For starters, England need to make a change in the playing XI. I see Ian Bell coming in, Jonny Bairstow keeping wickets. I am also anticipating some changes in the bowling department.

Steve Finn bowled well and Samit Patel had a good match. Graeme Swann has to bowl in the powerplays. He is the world’s number one bowler and it is time England utilised him.

I felt for Jade Dernbach, who was isolated on the field. He was left on his own and no one spoke to him.

Yes, the odd ball can be nicked to the boundary, but in most cases it is difficult to put it away. India had it easy in the run chase and won in a canter. England need to sit down and address the issues. It is hard to understand how the world’s best Test team is one of the weaker sides in ODIs. There’s something fundamentally wrong here.

England have got to make something happen because they came here with a young side and a lot of expectations.

They should have scored a lot more than they did. From the platform they had, they lost their way in the middle.

I am sure Andy Flower will be addressing the issues on why everything is going wrong.

For India, it is going well. I believe it is due to their skipper MS Dhoni. He is an asset to the team as captain and player.
