Time to give Kohli a chance

It’s a do-or-die game for both India and New Zealand. The media is abuzz with reports that the pitch will have a green-top. I, however, doubt it. Still, I must say that there has been enough movement on the surface to give a fair chance to the bat as well as the ball. Indian batting has looked below par in testing conditions and it will be important that Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Gary Kirsten solve the problem before this crucial game begins.

There are question marks on Dinesh Karthik, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja’s form. They have not shown enough improvement in spite of so many opportunities. Time has come to give a chance to Virat Kohli, who has made a lot more use of the opportunities given to him.

The Indian batsmen are making a big mistake by opening the face of the bat, which is very dangerous especially when the ball is moving around.

The New Zealand bowlers are not very quick but have got enough bounce from this Dambulla wicket to trouble the batsmen. The Indians must take confidence from the fact that they have come through pretty difficult conditions in the recent past, especially in the Asia Cup, when they had an indifferent tournament and yet managed to pull it off in the final. They did the same in the recently concluded Test series.

India must play an extra batsman. The form of the batsmen, other than Virender Sehwag, has not been very encouraging.
