Rohit should open in second ODI

India conceded at least 40 extra runs in Durban. They ought to have done better after having claimed three early South African wickets. Jacques Kallis was missing too. Yet South Africa roared on.

South Africa did most of the things right including winning the toss. Besides batting, their pace attack too was a tad too hot on a pitch which had something for the bowlers. All in all, they were runaway winners.

India ought to look at their line-up closely. They need to rearrange their set-up now that the two regulars of the side, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag, are missing. I would back Rohit Sharma as an opener ahead of Murali Vijay. Vijay is promising but I feel Rohit might just be a better bet at this stage.

I also feel Vijay is your Test opener for the future. With tours to England and Australia coming up, it will be wise to groom him for the longer version. Yes, there will be the tracks at Port Elizabeth and Centurion, which look more like Indian tracks, but I am looking at a bigger picture.

So, I wouldn't be surprised if Rohit and Sachin Tendulkar pad up at the start of the second match. Virat Kohli again caught the eye and there is no reason to lose faith in Suresh Raina yet.

Yuvraj too would be persisted with. He got one of the better deliveries of the match. He didn't have time to find his feet when he was done in by Morne Morkel.

Yusuf Pathan at number six or seven wouldn't be such a bad ploy once you have considered the surface. A few of the certainties for the World Cup must be conveyed that they are wanted.

There is no need to be despondent for South Africa always are a very competent side in their backyard. As India showed in Test series, they are extremely dangerous when pinned to the wall.

It's not over yet.
