Lots of pluses for Deccan Chargers

Well 12 months is long time in cricket. This time last year the Deccan Chargers finished stone motherless last in the initial season of the iPL. Two wins in 14 games meant massive changes on and off the field firstly and most importantly a new coach and captain. With Adam Gilchrist as captain and Darren Lehman as coach stability was gained and followed through but probably only in their wildest dreams would they have imagined holding up the trophy at the end of iPL 2009.

These two swashbuckling left hander are infectious character’s who play hard on the field and like to have fun off the field. Lehman brought in Australian fielding coach Mike Young as he identified brilliant fielding as a key in winning T20 cricket.
Gily had a great series with a strike rate of 152 age hasn’t lessoned his hitting power and his audacious 85 off 35 balls against Delhi in the semi finals was a captain’s innings of the highest order. He was bitterly disappointed with his teams showing in 2008 and had to endure team failure probably for the first time in his career. He certainly can be proud of his efforts on and off the field in 2009 and nobody will celebrate harder.
Also the performances of Deccan Indians players will hold great news for the Indian fans and selectors,

PP Ojha Left arm orthodox’s were a key both penetrating and economical.18 wickets at average 0f 19 with an economy rate of 6.50 was outstanding and most importantly he bowled beautifully in the final. His career should blossom from now on in.

RP Singh main weapon has always been his swing but control and variety his weakness. Still only 23 years of age he looks to have a lot offer as he is maturing into a more complete fast bowler and 23 wickets at 18 economy rate of 7 are figures any spearhead would be proud of.

Surely Rohit Sharma’s an international star waiting to happen in all forms of the game. The quicker he gets into the Test team the better for fans all round the world. Some of his driving is exquisite but he can innovate with power as well. And he isn’t the worst finger spinner going around either. India have some of the best under 23 players going around in world cricket at the moment and experience in the iPL will only help them settle into international ranks quicker.

And for the South African Herschelle Gibbs patience getting his side home with an unbeaten 53. It finished an impressive tournament with 371 runs at 33 plus passing 50 on 4 times. Match that against his last years efforts of 167 runs at 18 no 50’s and you can see what a presence he has been on home turf.

Also credit must go to Royal Challengers Bangalore as well finishing a gallant second. Coach ray Jennings and captain Anil Kumble got the team in form and more importantly belief to win. Kumble had a wonderful tournament and when he knocked over Gilchrist in the first over for a duck in the final a fairytale finish awaited. Unfortunately for the old spinning warrior it never came.
