Thilan Samaraweera is a right-handed middle order batsman from Colombo. He started out as an off-spinner but his Test century on debut against India helped him build out a reputation as a specialist Test batsman. A gritty and well organised player, Samaraweera cemented his place in the Test team between 2001-2005. Then came inconsistency, which saw the right-hander being dropped from the team. He was recalled in the Test squad in 2007. With the exit of Hashan Tillakaratne and Aravinda de Silva from the side, he has paved his place in the middle order, where his serene and no-risks approach provides a useful counterpoint to his more colorful colleagues.
