Signs of a seasoned batsman are on display whenever Hashim Amla takes the crease. The right hander is the first South African of Indian descent to make it to the national squad. He played his first Test against India on November 28 in 2004. His performances initially were not so remarkable. Fortunately he made the most of his second opportunity when he scored 149 against New Zealand at Cape Town in which the match ended in a draw.

Before he made it to the world of international cricket, Amla put up decent performances while playing in the Under-19 category. He also captained the Under-19 South Africa team in 2002. He scored four centuries in his first eight innings in the domestic cricket season of 2004-05 as a captain of the Dolphins team. Amla's elder brother too is a first-class player and debuted two seasons before him.

Amla is known for demonstrating excellent stroke-play and cool temperament. He has also exhibited a certain flair for hitting boundaries in Tests and Twenty20. Certain hints of good leadership skills may give him give an edge over other players.
