Profile

Ashwell Prince found a place in the national team for the first time due to quota system prevalent in South Africa. He debuted against Australia on February 22 in 2004 scored a modest 49 runs in the match.

The left- hander found a place in the middle order by scoring brilliantly as an answer to his quota based selection. However, at the start of the 2002-2003 season he was completely out of form failing in four consecutive home Tests against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Following that, he put up some good domestic performances. In the 2004-2005 season , he hammered 139 runs against Zimbabwe at the Centurion and 131 in South Africa's 2-0 win against the West Indies.

He scored a fine 119 in a Test against Australia in 2006. However, during this series Shane Warne famously dismissed him in the first five innings. Soon after, when the Australians toured South Africa Prince scored 93 in the first innings.

The southpaw had extended trouble with a shoulder injury despite which he exhibits commendable fielding in the covers. When Graeme Smith pulled out due to an injury in July 2006, he was named as the skipper for a short while. His ODI shirt number reads 5+0, which is a mark of respect to the late Hansie Cronje.
