Profile

A medium-fast bowler, Graham Onions was kept waiting anxiously on the bench for three years before he finally got his opportunity to make his mark at the highest level. During this time and before that, he proved time and again that his consistent wicket-taking exploits with county club Durham was no fluke.

It was in the year 2006 that his name cropped up for the first time to be part of the international squad. He was first named in the 20-man provisional squad for the 2006 Champions Trophy and in September that year was called into the England squad as a replacement for the injured Darren Gough. However, he did not manage to break into the playing XI on both occasions.

2007 saw him put up commendable performances for the England Lions and in early 2008, Onions picked up his best ODI figures when he ended with figures of 7/39 against Maharashtra. But the rest of the year was not kind to him as he was benched with injuries and watched Durham lift their maiden County Championship from the sidelines as he couldn't break into a strong squad.

However, his determination never once waned and he was rewarded for his hard work the following summer when strong performances led to his call-up to the squad to face West Indies at Lord's, at the expense of an injured Stephen Harmison.

Onions did not squander the opportunity he had been waiting for and picked up 7 wickets on debut. Since then he has been a strong contender for a place in the final XI. With the England squad susceptible to injuries in the recent past, only strong, consistent performances will guarantee him of a regular place in the side.
