Profile
Herschelle Gibbs sports a swashbuckling style when he takes on the crease. He was only 16 when he made his first class debut. The top order batsman played his first international Test against India on November 27 in 1996.When he is not exploiting the bowlers with his aggressive strokes, Gibbs worries the batsmen by his formidable fielding. He holds the credit for claiming one of the highest number of run-outs. Ironically, Gibbs is notoriously known for dropping Steve Waugh’s catch in the semifinal of the World Cup in 1999 which cost South Africa the world title.
Another of his feats include towering partnerships with his teammates, especially with Graeme Smith. He is among those few batsmen who have hit six sixes in an over. He has always been the choice for the top order in the batting line-up. However he was shifted to the middle order when he was out of form for a while.
One of his famous innings includes the one-day tie against Australia in March 2006 wherein South Africa chased down a seemingly impossible score of 434 runs with a ball to spare. Gibbs contributed a fast paced 175 off 111 balls.
Gibbs has been the crux of many controversies from time to time. His involvement in the match fixing scandal in 2001, tarnished his career to quite some extent. The International Cricket Council banned Gibbs for two Tests for violating their code of conduct in a match against Pakistan in 2007. He was also charged for consuming marijuana and drunken driving.
