India slip to third place in ODI rankings
Mumbai: The seven-game ODI series against Australia has come as a rude shock to India’s aspirations of topping the ICC ODI rankings. The series scoreline of 4-2 after the Mumbai ODI was washed out on Wednesday, ensured that India slipped from second to the third position in the ICC rankings.
The buoyant Australian side, which had come to India following their Champions Trophy victory, dominated the hosts in every department despite replacing nine of their players due to injury. The series victory has strongly reaffirmed Australia’s top status in the rankings.
In order to reclaim the top rankings, India had to win the series but were found wanting and outclassed by the Aussies.
In contrast, Australia return home with a fine winning streak, as they had earlier won the ODI series against England 6-1 and followed it with a fantastic victory at the Champions Trophy and now a convincing 4-2 victory against India in their own backyard.
Australia will now take on West Indies in a three-game home Test series, starting from November 26.
