This is England's 12th Test tour of India. They have won three out of the 11 Test series that have been held in India since 1933-34. They also won the 1980 Golden Jubilee Test. A Test series-win has eluded England since their victory here in 1984-85 under David Gower's captaincy.
Their five-Test tour in 1988-89 was never staged since the Indian government refused to issue visas to two players in the English side Graham Gooch and captain Rob Bailey. To worsen this scenario, the ECB refused to replace these cricketers from the squad.
The Indian cricket board was reportedly angry that Gooch had never apologised for going on a rebel tour in 1981-82.
