Andy Atkinson
Andy Atkinson is International Cricket Council (ICC)'s pitch consultant – many must have not paid attention to his name but he is a pivotal figure in the administration of modern-day cricket. Abhijit Shetti profiles this affable curator from Surrey.
Atkinson has spent nearly 30 years of his life keeping an eye on the pitch, the soil and tended to it. At most grounds he's always seen instructing the ground staff, volunteering on many an occasion, to ensure the players get the best possible pitch.
During a match when the heavens open up, he is the man running to the centre, trying to ensure that the pitch and outfield are in top condition.
One vivid memory of Atkinson is during the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in November 2006 between Australia and West Indies in Mumbai. He was seen taking water off the covers to get play started as quickly as possible.
But what Atkinson is always remembered for is his run-in with former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq during India's tour in 2003-04. Inzamam accused Atkinson of preparing a pitch which did not suit his fast bowlers.
The battle between Inzamam and Atkinson intensified. Infact it even became hillarious at times because after Inzamam accused him of shaving off the grass from the pitch, Atkinson hit back. He shaved off his moustache and cheekily added, "Inzy asked me to shave it off".
During the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa, Atkinson was sceptical about the shortest version of the game, but he finally succumbed to the excitement and found it interesting that two results were possible in a day.
