Talented young Indian players like Gautam Gambhir, Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla and S Sreesanth have been the stand-out performers in the inaugural edition of the IPL. Yet, it is no secret that none of these players have firmly established themselves in the national squad (may it be ODIs or Tests).

In fact, Shane Watson who has emerged as the MVP of the inaugural league is not on the flight to the Caribbean where the Aussies are to play 4 Tests and 5 ODIs in the forthcoming weeks.

Players such as Laxmipathy Balaji, Amit Mishra and even Ashish Nehra have performed exceptionally well but again, are not expectant to regain a national recall anytime in the near future.

So the question is - Can outstanding performances in the IPL guarantee a berth in the national squad? Is the IPL really a good enough medium to judge the talent of these players?

It’s true that quite a few players have caught the eye in the inaugural edition of the IPL but we can not judge them only on the basis of this tournament.

Look at Shaun Marsh, he is doing exceptionally well for the King’s XI Punjab side. But I’m sure Australia would not rush things.

Players like Balaji, Nehra should play more domestic cricket before they get a recall to the national side. In T20, one gets to bowl only 4 overs/ match. I am not too sure on whether Nehra and Balaji can survive the gruels of bowling 10/ 20 overs in a day.

I would love to see the players go through the grind before they get national team calls.
